Say “YES” to a Spontaneous Event

Today is Day 5 of my Happiness Hacks series.

HH Day #5 - Say YESThis morning I did something out of character and said “yes” to a fun, spontaneous event. My friend Alison had posted on her Facebook page yesterday about a local coffee shop becoming Luke’s Diner for one morning in honor of the 16th anniversary of The Gilmore Girls series (one of our favorites). Several of us commented about wanting to go. Alison knew there would be a big crowd at the official 7:00 am start time, and because only the first 250 people were eligible for free coffee and a special, unknown souvenir, 6:00 am was our designated meeting time.

Luke's DinerLast night, after staying up late working on a frustrating, anxiety-producing technical issue on my website (definitely NOT a happiness hack), I didn’t get to bed until 11:30. I had an internal debate about whether I should actually get up at 5:15 am to go to Luke’s Diner. After all, a good night’s sleep is usually at the top of my priority list. But, remembering that I’m doing this Happiness Hacks series and trying to build in a daily happiness boost, I decided I better go for it.

img_9429I’m so thankful that I did. Sitting chatting with friends and sipping a mediocre coffee with a Luke’s Diner sleeve on it, I wondered why we don’t do meet-ups like this more often. I thought of the TV series Cheers, where everyone just showed up, every evening, to hang out together. No texting or planning or checking schedules or needing to find a date two weeks in advance just to have coffee with a friend.

img_9428Just like Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, we showed up at Luke’s Diner this morning for coffee. And it was an awesome way to start the day.

Next time there’s some random, crazy event that someone tells me about (even at 6:00 am), I’m going to say, “YES!”
